In a profound dialogue with Lisa Ijeoma and Rachel Hansoul, we delved into the glaring issue of the underrepresentation of black women in both art and art education. It's evident that the artworks predominantly showcased in schools and museums often lack diversity, portraying a predominantly white narrative. A simple Google search for 'famous paintings of women' overwhelmingly yields results featuring white subjects.
This realization sparked a pivotal question: What if these renowned paintings depicted women of colour? What if women of colour were granted the same level of representation and recognition as their white counterparts?

Thus, this project was born. I meticulously selected three iconic paintings renowned for their depiction of female beauty: the Mona Lisa, the Girl with a Pearl Earring, and Botticelli’s Venus. These masterpieces, though celebrated, notably lack representation of women of colour.

Through the medium of patchwork, I endeavoured to recreate these renowned artworks, offering a platform for women of colour in the realm of art. While remaining faithful to the essence of the originals, my adaptations intentionally diverge, providing a distinct space for these women of colour. I ardently believe that these pieces serve as a catalyst for discourse, illuminating the pressing issue of representation in art and advocating for the rightful place of women of colour in the artistic canon.
